VICE PRESIDENT PROMISES IRRIGATION DEVELOPMENT
Cirebon, Indonesia, June 23 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has admitted that over the past ten years the government had not carried out any new irrigation project in the country, and promised to correct this failure.
"Shortcomings should be addressed, for instance irrigation in this country. I promise to develop irrigation," Kalla said in a meeting with ulema (Muslim clerics), farmers and fishermen at An Nashuha Islamic boarding school at Pabedilan, Cirebon, West Java, on Tuesday.
Without good irrigation systems, it will be difficult for farmers to make a decent living, he said.
In response to a farmer's question, he admitted that Indonesia which had very vast oceans still had to import salt from India and Australia.
"Therefore, our program is to increase the quality of the country's salt, either in Cirebon, Madura and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), so that we don't have to import salt any more. Basically, it's not difficult to improve the quality of salt," he said.
Jusuf Kalla also said that he had instructed the construction of a number of fertilizer plants to meet farmers' need for fertilizer.
"Fertilizer shortages happen not only because of distribution problems but mainly because of the very high demand for fertilizer. I promise I will construct many fertilizer plants so there will be no more fertilizer shortages in the future," he said at the function to observe the 39th anniversary of An Nashuha Islamic Boarding School.
Vice President M Jusuf Kalla also visited Islamic boarding schools in Losari (West Java) and Brebes (Central Java) on Tuesday.
At Assalam Islamic Boarding School ('pesantren'), Kalla was scheduled to meet a number of fishermen and farmers in Losari, Cirebon.
From Cirebon, he would proceed to Brebes, to officially close a congress of the Nahdlatul Ulama's Female Student Association (IPPNU) and to visit Al Hikmah Islamic Boarding School at Benda.
He would return to Cirebon and later to Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon.***
