MINISTER: POSITIVE GROWTH IN MODERN RETAIL SALES
Jakarta, June 24 (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said modern retail sales during the past five months had seen positive growth.
"Retail sales have remained positive. Ramayana department store's sales rose five percent this year compared to last year. Conditions match the results of a survey by Nielsen, namely retail sales in Indonesia growing by seven percent in the first quarter. So, it is still positive," she said after visiting Ramayana Mall in Klender, East Jakarta, on Wednesday.
Tip Top Swalayan in Rawamangun which was also inspected by the minister meanwhile recorded a 12-percent growth in sales compared with last year reaching Rp500 billion.
Because of the positive growth Tip Top was planning to expand in 2010. "We will open another outlet next year," Tip Top's director of business development Affan Rusman said.
Affan said the new outlet would be Tip Top's seventh outlet. "We already have a location in mind for the new outlet but a feasibility study is now still underway," he said.
He said the new outlet would cost between Rp8 billion and Rp9 billion. "We are lucky a bank will give us a loan with a 13 percent interest," he said.
The chairman of the Indonesia Retail Business Association (Aprindo), Benjamin J Mailool, said that the impact of the crisis was still being felt.
He said stagnation in the property sector and difficulties to obtain bank credits had hindered expansion of retail business.
"So there will be stagnation in new outlet development. Its impact on the economy can be bad because retail business is distribution business and therefore distribution will be hindered if outlet development is hindered," he said.
Benjamin however said he was still optimistic the target of growth in retail turnover this year set at 10 percent would be achieved.
"There will be a presidential election and the Islamic post-fasting holiday in the second semester this year which will be a very important momentum. The event will move public economic activity. Although the situation this year will not be as good as last year when the growth reached 20 percent we remain optimistic," he said.
