ACEH EXPORTING 90 TONS OF FISH TO MALAYSIA EACH MONTH

Banda Aceh, June 24 (ANTARA) - Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province exports 90 tons of fresh fish per month to Malaysia, a fisheries businessman said.

Secretary of Fish Traders of Aceh (ASIA), Zulkifli said here on Wednesday Aceh shipped an average of 3 tons of fresh fish which constituted fish catch of local fishermen to Malaysia through Belawan port in Medan, North Sumatra.

He said exporters in Medan shipped tens of tons of fish, including fish from Aceh, to Malaysia and Singapore.

Investors and traders in Aceh are not yet able to market their fish produce to Malaysia or Singapore because besides having not enough work capital Aceh also lacked an export seaport.

Zulkifli said Aceh actually deserved to have an export seaport because it had fresh fish potentials produced by local fishermen that could be exported.

He said that up to now only a small portion of Aceh's fishermen's fish catches was being exported. It was a fact that Aceh's fishermen were able to catch an average of 100 tons of fish per day. Of the total, only about three tons were exported. The remaining fish catches were sold in the local market and Medan.

Zulkifli hoped that the government would help develop Aceh's fishery potentials maximally so that local traders and fishermen would be able to improve their welfare. This also could increase Aceh's original income (PAD).

In order to develop Aceh's catch fish potentials, the government should build an export seaport which is equipped with supporting facilities such as cold storage.

He said that the local government looked as if it did not pay much attention to the development of the catch fishery sector. This was reflected in its PAD where the fishery sector only contributed 6.5 percent.***2***
