WIRAJUDA TO VISIT CHINA TO STRENGTHEN TIES

Beijing, June 25 (ANTARA) - Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda is scheduled to pay a visit to Beijing on July 1-2, 2009 to hold talks with a number of important Chinese officials on increasing bilateral ties between the two countries, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said.

"At the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Minister Wirajuda will be paying a two-day official visit in China," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang told the press here on Thursday.

Gang said that the two ministers would meet to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues.

Since both sides signed a China-Indonesia strategic partnership cooperation in Jakarta in 2005, the Jakarta-Beijing bilateral relations have gained significant progress and advancement.

The various fields of cooperation between the two countries included politics, economy, trade, social and culture and tourism, which have continued to show progresses.

China, Gang said, is of the view that Indonesia is an important and strategic country so that it continued to step up its cooperation with Jakarta.

Qin Gang did not give details on the specific topics the two ministers would discuss in the meeting.

"For sure, both foreign ministers will discuss efforts to increase bilateral relations between the two nations," Qin Gang said.

During his visit to Beijing, Wirajuda will also meet with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang and other high officials in that country.

Asked on the possibility of both sides to sign an extradition treaty, Qin Gang diplomatically said he had no idea about the matter.

"I will check it first," he said.

Indonesian Ambassador to China Sudrajat said the two foreign ministers were scheduled to sign an extradition agreement on July 1, 2009 after several earlier plans had been delayed.

"The two ministers are scheduled to sign the extradition agreement on July 1, 2009," the ambassador said sometime earlier.

The agreement was previously planned to be signed last year but it was delayed because the two ministers were busy with their respective agenda.***5***
