PRABOWO : AGRICULTURAL SECTOR NEEDS MORE ATTENTION

Jombang, East Java, June 25 (ANTARA) - Chairman of the National Leadership Council of the Indonesian Farmers' Association (HKTI) Prabowo Subianto said the agricultural sector needs to be given more attention for the betterment of the national economy.

"The agricultural sector now gets only 1.6 percent of the state budget, while in fact 60 percent of the Indonesian people are farmers," Prabowo said in his opening speech of the East Java chapter of HKTI, here on Thursday.

Overseas loans were not yet optimally used to improve the capacity of development, including in the agricultural sector, he said.

"If the loans are used to increase the development capacity, it's o.k. But if it used for other purposes -- it's very wrong," he said.

The Indonesian Farmers' Association has rejected liberalism and neoliberalism for long, as they only gave benefit to few people, and not peoples of all walks of life, he said.

He urged cadres of the farmers' association to be actively involved in the political arena, so that they could strive for the political rights of the farmers.

"Thanks God, there are seven cadres of the Indonesian Farmers' Association (HKTI) now have seats in the House of Representatives (DPR RI), and hundreds of others are in city and district legislative councils. They are expected to be able to fight for the rights of farmers and the public," Prabowo, a vice presidential candidate who pairs with presidential aspirant Megawati Soekarnoputri, said.

He believed that if the agricultural sector could be bolstered optimally, the national economic system will be better.

Earlier Prabowo Subianto paid a familial visit to former East Java Governor Mohammad Noer in Surabaya.

During the visit, the former governor for three periods advised Prabowo to pay more attention to the people's interest if he was elected as vice president to accompany Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Indonesia will hold its second direct presidential election on July 8, 2009.
