RI EXPORTING MAIZE TO FOUR ASIAN COUNTRIES
Jakarta, June 25 (ANTARA) - Since it became maize self-sufficient last year, Indonesia has been helping to meet the need for maize of four Asian countries, National Maize Council secretary Mardeyul Sola said.
The four Asian countries were Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan, Sola said here here Thursday.
He said Indonesian maize could be further processed into various other products in foreign countries. Besides as food for humans , Indonesian maize could also be processed into animal feed and cosmetics, he said.
Sola said Indonesia's maize production was increasing because the crop was very easy to cultivate on any type of soil in Indonesia. Previously, maize was produced only as a commodity for household consumption.
After successfully exporting the product since 2008, Indonesia was now receiving increasing overseas orders for maize and importing less and less of the commodity.
Usually, Indonesia imports one million tons of maize per annum but since domestic production had increased the volume of its maize imports had dropped , he said.
He said Indonesia's biggest maize producing regions were East Java and Central Java which each produced five million tons per annum.
Other big maize producing regions were in Sumatra such as North Sumatra and Lampung which jointly increased the country's total maize production to 16 million tons per annum.
In the meantime, on soybean, Indonesia now is also able to produce 700 thousand tons per annum while its need for soybean reaches 2.5 million tons per year so that it still has to import 1.2 million tons of soybean.
Gorontalo Governor Fadel Muhammad in a seminar on maize production here on Wednesday said that his province would export in the near future about 8,000 tons of maize to the Philippines.
He said that national maize production was increasing where this year a total of 16.47 million tons had been produced while imports of the commodity had also been cut down.
Fadel said that world maize production was estimated at 750 million tons, of which 75 million tons were exported to 70 countries including 15 advanced nations. ***2***
