RI`S ELECTION NOT TO BE LIKE IRAN`S : OBSERVER

Bandung, Indonesia, June 26 (ANTARA) - The upcoming July 8 presidential election in Indonesia will not be as risky as that in Iran, an observer said.

"With better political institution supported by civilized culture of Indonesian nationals, the presidential election will not be marred with turmoil like that in Iran," political expert at Pajajaran University, Affan Sulaeman said here on Friday.

He said that unlike foreign countries, there are no outstanding ideological differences in Indonesia so the conflict in the democracy can be relatively overcame through the existing institutional mechanism.

In addition, he said the controversial position of Iranian President Ahmadinejad in his domestic and foreign policy was a probable factor in the country's post-election turmoil.

In spite of various shortcomings in the election process in Indonesia, Affan Sulaeman said the civilized culture and the spirit of cooperation would effectively eliminate the possible conflict in the Indonesian democratic festivity.

However, Affan added that the Indonesian government should take a good lesson from the post-election conflict in Iran for the democracy in Indonesia.

He said the Indonesian government should anticipate every political phenomena abroad and take it as an input in its effort to improve the performance of political institution at home.

"Indonesia has been fed up with conflict, and the people are well aware that the conflict will never have any advantage in the country," said the former member of West Java General Election Commission (KPU).

In addition, he said the long history of political movement in Indonesia since 1908 to 1945 proclamation of independence and the reform movement in 1998 up to the present would be a motivating factor for political institution in the country to manage a conflict well.

He said the conflict management by political institution in Indonesia at present has been better than before as shown in the peaceful regional and legislative elections.

"Almost every problem in the country can be solved through the existing political institution mechanism which continues to be more effective and better," he said.***
