MEGAWATI SIGNS POLITICAL CONTRACT WITH BEM
Sidoarjo, Indonesia, June 26 (ANTARA) - Presidential aspirant Megawati Soekarnoputri signed a political contract with the Indonesian Students Executive Board (BEM) on Friday.
The political contract was signed be Megawati at the VIP room of Juanda International Airport in Surabaya.
Megawati said some of the points in the political contract called for the revocation of article 53 in the Law No.20/2003 on the national education system (BHP), rejection of the commercialization of education in various fields, and the improvement of the national education system.
"We have all along opposed the law on BHP because it imposes a heavy burden on our young people wishing to enjoy higher education," Megawati said.
The presidential aspirant nominated by Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) said many students with good academic scores aspiring to continue their studies at univerisites had to give up their ambition because they could not afford the financial cost.
"Students with good academic performance will find it difficult to enter university if their parents do not have enough money to pay admission fee," Megawati said in the company of Surabaya Mayhor Bambang DH, East Java PDIP chairman Sirmadji, and PDIP treasurer Bambang Suhartono.
On the occasion, Megawati promised that regardles of whether she wins or loses the upcoming presidential election on July 8, she would continue to struggle for the revision of the Law on BHP.
"This law must be revised so as to put an end to the commercialization of higher education," Megawati said.
Meanwhile, a representatibe of Airlangga University's BEM, Faris, said all students would support Megawati in her effort to have the law revised.
"Whether Megawati is elected president or not, she has promised to struggle for the revision of the law, and we will support her in this," Faris said.
Faris said he and 28 other representatives of BEM across Indonesia would continue to support Megawati in accordance with the political contract the presidential aspirant had signed.***
