KPK NOT SUPER BODY: ADVISER

Jakarta, June 27 (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is not a super body or an institution with unlimited authority, KPK adviser Abdullah Hehamahua said.

"Many people said that KPK was a super body while in reality it is not," Abdullah Hehamahua said in a dialog on KPK and presidential campaigns here on Saturday.

Hehamahua made the remark in response to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's alleged statement that the KPK was a super body, and the efforts of the Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP)'s intention to audit it.

He said the KPK was bound by the law in carrying out its tasks. For example, the anti-graft body had to ask permission from the court before it could search a person's quarters.

In addition, KPK could not investigate a corruption case which did not involve state officials, he said. It could only investigate a case which caused a loss to the state of Rp1 billion and over.

"So, how could KPK be a super body?" he said.

Referring to the BPKP audit on KPK, he said it was a mistake. According to Hehamahua, KPK is a state institution outside the BPKP's authority to audit.

"KPK is a state institution, not a government agency so that it could not be audited by BPKP," he stressed.

He said that BPKP could only supervise the use of state money by an institution under the president.

On Wednesday, Yudhoyono said a too strong power was dangerous. He viewed that KPK had become a power holder whose power was too big.

"In connection with KPK, I repeatedly warned that power must not go unchecked. KPK has become an exceptional power holder. It could only account it to God. Please be careful," he said during a visit to the daily Kompas office as published by the daily.

He said he wanted all those involved in the efforts to fight corruption to be clean.

"If there is a mistake in KPK, much more it is linked with corruption, those who would become ashamed are not only KPK but also all Indonesian people. For me nobody is above the law in this country," the said.
