JK-WIN PAIR TO CONFRONT KPK DETRACTORS

Balikpapan, Indonesia, June 27 (ANTARA) - Those who try to undermine the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will invite conflict with the Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto presidential and vice-presidential candidate duo, a spokesman for the pair said.

"Those who have aired opinions tending to compromise the KPK risk a confrontation with the JK-Win ticket," Yudhi Chrisnandi, spokesman of the JK-Win campaign team said here Saturday.

He said it was the JK-Win's view that the KPK's existence should be supported as it had so far not yet performed optimally.

Speaking to reporters traveling with Jusuf Kalla and members of his campaign team, including Chrisnandi, in a Fokker plane to Balikpapan, he said the KPK's operations had yet to fully satisfy the people's sense of justice and therefore, the JK-Win camp would maintain the KPK and make it perform optimally.

He said presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's statement labeling the KPK as a "super body" had dangerous implications as it was made by a president and could be construed as an intention to downgrade the KPK's role.

Yudhoyono's statement sounded as if he was disappointed with the KPK and intended to interfere in its business but thereby he could have weakened the KPK's morale or made it feel no longer supported by the president, Chrisnandi said,
He also said the JK-Win pair would instruct all their cadres in the House of Representatives (DPR) to work for the speedy passage of the Bill on Corruption (RUU Tipikor) before the present House members terms expire on September 30.

"The Law on Corruption is needed as the constitutional basis of the KPU's existence, functions and powers," he said, adding it was hoped Kalla's Golkar Party and Yudhoyono's Democratic Party could collaborate to speed up the enactment of the law.***
