RI TO SEND 50 PCT WORKERS FOR FORMAL SECTOR ABROAD

Jakarta, June 27 (ANTARA) - The National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesia Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) is planning this year to dispatch abroad 50 percent workers for the formal and 50 percent for the informal sector.

"The placement of workers in the formal sector would be boosted so that the present ratio of 36:64 for the formal and informal sectors could be changed into 50:50," BNP2TKI head Jumhur Hidayat was quoted as saying here on Saturday.

Hidayat was quoted as saying by BNP2TKI chief for public communications Mahmud F Rakasima that BNP2TKI was obliged to find employment market for Indonesia's skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Hidayat made the remarks when witnessing the signing of a cooperation agreement between BNP2TKI and the Indonesian Workers Bourse Association (ABKI) in Yogyakarta.

The cooperation covers an agreement for the preparations of skilled and semi-skilled workers for the formal sector.

The agreement was signed by BNP2TKI deputy head for workers placement, Ade Adam Noch and ABKI general chairman Mohsein Saleh Badegel.

At present, about six million Indonesian migrant workers (TKIs) are working abroad, of which about 1.5 million do not have complete documents, or illegal TKIs.

Of the six million, 4.5 million are legal workers but 64 percent of which are working in the informal sector, or house maids.

Jumhur Hidayat said that BNP2TIKI would prepare market for employment of workers while ABKI would provide skilled and semi-skilled workers.

The skilled and semi-skilled workers would come from 324 vocational schools throughout Indonesia.

"BNP2TKI will declare this year as the beginning year for increasing the quality of TKIs for the formal sector. Therefore, the agency will continue to increase the number of work placement opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled TKIs in various countries in the Asia - Pacific region, Europe, the United States, South Africa and the Middle East," he said.

He said that the enhancement of the job opportunities would be done through cooperation with various sides, both with the private sector and with the G-to-G scheme.***
