KPK FACING ATTEMPTS TO WEAKEN ITS PERFORMANCE: OBSERVER

Jakarta, June 27 (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is now facing attempts by certain parties to weaken its performance in fighting corruption, an observer said.

"I think KPK is now facing efforts by certain quarters to weaken its performance," corruption observer Saldi Isra said during a dialog on corruption issues and presidential campaigns here on Saturday.

Saldi made the statement in response to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's remark on Wednesday that KPK was a "super body" that had too much power.

He said efforts to weaken KPK had been made before through political and formal legal interventions.

Saldi said several judicial reviews on corruption eradication law and the law on KPK were formal legal interventions that could weaken the efforts to eradicate corruption.

Besides, political institutions also often intervened into various KPK's authorities, such as its efforts to tap activities in government agancies.

"There are many steps taken by KPK which are always questioned," Saldi said.

With regard to the planned auditing of KPK by BPKP, Saldi said that the step was wrong. He said BPKP had no authority to audit KPK because KPK was an independent institution which was not responsible to the president.

"The BPKP could only audit an institution within the executive branch of government," Saldi, a constitutional law expert, said.

Chairuman Harahap, a coordinator of Jusuf Kalla - Wiranto's campaign team said that SBY's statement and the BPKP plan to audit KPK were indications of inconvenience with KPK.

SBY-Bodiono success team member Nursyahbani Katjasoengkana said that Yudhoyono had no intention to weaken KPK.

She appealed to the people to look at Yudhoyono's statement within its whole context. His statement, she said, referred to the power in general when he said all powers must not go unchecked.

"So, there is no intention to weaken KPK," Katjasoengkana said.

She said that planned auditing of BPKP on KPK was beyond the knowledge of Yudhoyono in his capacity as the president.***
