ABOUT 1,600 INDONESIAN STUDENTS STUDYING IN JAPAN

Jakarta, July 27 (ANTARA) - There are about 1,600 Indonesian students studying in Japan this year, a Japanese diplomat said here on Saturday.

Director for Information and Culture Affairs of the Japanese Embassy here Masaki Tani said that most of the Indonesian students were scholarship recipients from the Japanese government, agencies and companies.

He said that in 2008, the number of Indonesian university students in Japan reached 1,791, and 690 of them were recipients of government scholarships for post graduate.

Indonesian students obtained scholarships besides from the Japanese government also from companies and other private institutions, both local and international institutions.

The Japanese government's scholarships which are known by the Indonesian students are provided by the ministry of education, culture, sports, science and technology.

The Japanese embassy in Jakarta, its consulate general in Surabaya, Medan and Makassar annually conduct registration and selection for would-be scholarship recipients.

Programs offered to students included research student program for university graduates, undergraduate program, college of technology and professional training college for senior high school graduates.

Basically, the education system in Japan is similar to that in Indonesia, namely six years in elementary schools, three years in junior high schools, elementary school and junior high school are compulsory education, and three years in senior high school and four years in the higher institution.

In the meantime, the length of period of education in the post graduate education in Japan is similar to Indonesia, namely two years for S2 (strata II) and three years for S3 (strata III). ***
