PWI OPPOSES VIOLENCE AGAINST JOURNALISTS
Jakarta, June 27 (ANTARA) - Former chairman of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Tarman Azzam said he was very concerned about the violence committed by a Democratic Party (PD) cadre against a female journalist causing her to pass out.
"We will oppose any form of violence against journalists, especially against those who are on duty," Tarman said here on Saturday.
It was reported earlier that Ms Adeodata Julia Vanduk, a journalist of Media Sinar Harapan newspaper was kicked by a PD cadre identified as RK when Vanduk was covering an outdoor campaign held by vice presidential candidate Boediono in Jayapura last Friday at 09:30 local time.
The kick caused Vanduk to fall unconscious and she had to be rushed to a hospital, RSU Dok II, in Jayapura.
After the incident, Vanduk's colleagues reported the case to a police precint in Jayapura, and the police arrested RK.
Tarman Azzam said anyone who committed violence against journalists should not merely be punished, but his political party must also take stern action against him.
The Democratic Party should immediately settle the case, because it can create broad negative impact (against the party) in the upcoming presidential election, he said.
Azzam also said that a party should respect the presence of journalists, on the other hand, however, journalists should also conduct their coverage politely and abide by the rules.
Meanwhile, dozens of journalists in Jakarta, on Saturday (June 27) came to the Democratic Party central office, urging the party to take legal action in settling the case.
Boediono is the running mate of presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY-Boediono).
In the July 8, 2009 presidential polls, SBY-Boediono will compete with Jusuf Kalla who is also the incumbent vice president and chairman of the Golkar Party, and Megawati Soekarnoputri of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).
Jusuf Kalla pairs with Wiranto, chairman of the People's Conscience Party (Hanura) as his vice presidential candidate.
Meanwhile Megawati pairs with Prabowo Subianto of the Gerindra party.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) has set schedules for indoor campaigning from June 2 to 10, and mass rallies from June 11 to July 4, 2009. ***
