MUI DENIES IT HAS CALLED FOR DELAY IN DISPATCH OF HAJJ PILGRIMS
Jakarta, June 28 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) denied a report that it had suggested the government postpone the sending of hajj pilgrims to Saudi Arabia this year.
"We have never made that suggestion because it would be more disadvantageous owing to the fact that now there are 2,011 would-be hajj pilgrims in the waiting list for their departure," MUI secretary for the edict commission, Aminuddin Ya'qub said here on Sunday.
He said that if the government delayed the sending of would-be hajj pilgrims this year it would lengthen the number of waiting list. After all, a delay in the dispatches would not be accepted by would-be hajj pilgrims.
Aminuddin denied an earlier report by ANTARA which said that the MUI edict council had suggested the delay in the sending of hajj pilgrims this year.
He said that a suggestion to postpone the sending of hajj pilgrims was found in the release of the Mujahidin Council in a talk-show on menginitis vaccine at the Al Azhar mosque on Saturday.
"Possibly journalists have referred to it," he said.
"Actually, there is an idea among the people to delay the sending of the hajj pilgrims but it would be difficult to carry out because the number of those in the waiting list already reaches 700,000 pilgrims," he said.
Referring to the 'haram' (not allowed) edict of MUI on the menginitis vaccine for would-be hajj pilgrims, Aminuddin stressed that the vaccine was haram. But the use of the vaccine will still be discussed by the MUI Edict Assembly.
"We have never thought to suggest the government should delay the dispatch of hajj pilgrims," he said.
In Antara's previous report, it was said that MUI Deputy Secretary for Edict Commission Aminuddin Ya'qub had suggested that the government should postpone the sending of Hajj pilgrims this year following the haram edict of MUI over the menginitis vaccine.***4***
