DEFECTIVE BALLOTS REACH 50 THOUSAND: KPU
Jakarta, June 29 (ANTARA) - The number of defective ballots for the upcoming presidential elections on July 8, 2009 that needs replacement reaches 50 thousand pieces, General Elections Commission (KPK) deputy chairman for logistics affairs Boradi said.
"The biggest number is found in East Java with about 10 thousand ballots are defective due to asymmetrical and torn papers," Boradi said here on Monday.
He said that besides in East Java, in Semarag (Central Java) there are 4 thousand defective ballots due to red dots inside the picture column of a presidential candidate pair.
Besides in East Java and Semarang, the KPU logistics procurement committee also received a report on defective ballot papers in other regions, among others in Klaten, where as many as four thousand papers are found damaged.
The ballot papers are categorized as defective or damaged if they contained ink-tainted lines, spots or marks similar to the signs of preference.
Besides, the ballots are also considered defective or damaged if the pictures of presidential candidates were blurred, asymmetrical paper size, rips or holes inside the columns of the ballot papers.
Boradi said that KPU would seek clarifications first before taking follow-up steps on the report and decide to replace the damaged papers.
He called on KPU branches in districts/municipalities to be careful in issuing a statement on the number of ballot papers said to be damaged.
They are also requested to report and send samples of defective ballots to the logistics procurement committee.
After the defective ballots are declared unusable, the committee will ask the printing company to replace the damaged ballots.
Boradi also called on KPU branch offices in the district level to report if the number of ballots sent to a district was not in line with the data.
"If the number of ballots in the voting boxes turns out to be short we will print and sent additional ones," he said.***1***
