PRABOWO SKIPS MASS CAMPAIGN RALLY IN BLITAR

Blitar, June 29 (ANTARA) - Vice-presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto who is running with presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri skipped a scheduled massive campaign rally at Bendosewu square, Blitar district, East Java on Monday.

"He received unexpected news so that he is unable to attend the campaign rally," chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) for Blitar, Guntur Wahono said.

He said Prabowo and his campaign team had made preparations to stage a mass campaign rally in Blitar on Monday. But because suddenly he had another urgent matter to attend to, the schedule for the mass rally had to be changed.

Guntur said because Prabowo was not able to come to Blitar on Monday, the original program was changed into mobile vehicle campaign rallies which were conducted in all subdistricts.

"We have changed it into vehicle campaign rallies. We carry out the rallies simultaneously in all sub districts in Blitar," he said.

According to the original schedule, Prabowo and party were to have come to Blitar from Malang to conduct the mass rally.

Blitar is one of the districts which contributed a high number of votes for PDIP in last April's legislative elections.

In the 2004 presidential elections, about 50 percent of the votes went to PDIP.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) has set schedules for closed door campaigning from June 2 to 10, and mass rallies from June 11 to July 4, 2009
Prabowo of the Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) is pairing with Megawati of PDIP, to compete with two other presidential candidates in the upcoming presidential polls on July 8, 2009.

Incumbent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Democratic Party (PD) pairs with Boediono, and is competing with other candidates, namely Jusuf Kalla and his running mate retired General Wiranto, as well as with former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and Prabowo in the upcoming presidential race.
