DEMOCRAT TO REPORT VANDALIZED BILLBOARDS TO POLICE

Pasuruan, Indonesia,, June 30 (ANTARA) - The Democrat Party is to report the vandalized billboards of presidential aspirant Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his running mate Boediono (SBY-Boediono pair) in Pasuruan, East Java, to the police.

The party's spokesman Agus Rohmadi said here on Tuesday he would report the vandalized billboards of SBY-Boediono pair to Pasuruan Police on Tuesday.

He said a similar case has been reported to the Election Monitoring Committee (Panwaslu) in Pasuruan district but Panwaslu failed to respond to the report.

"So, today we will officially report the case to the police," Agus Rohmadi said, adding that at least one hundred billboards of the SBY-Boediono pair in Pasuruan had been vandalized.

He said a total of 350 billboards and street banners of the SBY-Boediono ticket were put up in the areas of Gempol, Pandaan, Bangil, Purwosari, and Purwodadi in Pasuruan district, and about 30 percent of them had been vandalized while those of other presidential aspirant pairs had been untouched.

Meanwhile, the SBY-Boediono campaign team in Bandarlampung on Monday also deplored the removal of the pair's billboards at Baruna Square following a campaign rally of presidential aspirant Megawati Soekarnoputri in the same venue.

"If the billboards were lowered by Megawati's supporters, we deeply deplore their action because presidential candidates should respect each other and not tarnish the beauty of democracy," SBY-Boediono campaign team spokesman for Lampung Fajrun Najah Ahmad said in Bandarlampung on Monday.

He expressed hope that the authorities, especially the Election Monitoring Committee (Panwaslu) could carry out its task fairly and report to the public if a violation had been committed.

But he added that the people were getting smarter and more prudent in choosing their presidential candidate, and so the degrading acts against the SBY-Boediono pair would not distract the pair's supporters from voting for them.

"We believe, the more the SBY-Boediono pair is put under pressure, the more solid the people will be in voting for Yudhoyono who never discredits his rivals in the elections," Fajrun said.

Fajrun said he had called on all SBY supporters and sympathizers in Lampung to continue practice clean, smart, and civilized politics.***
