SOEKARNO-HATTA AIRPORT AUTHORITIES ON ALERT TO SWINE FLU

Tangerang, Indonesia, June 30 (ANTARA) - The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is to tighten monitoring at arrival terminals as preventive measure against Influenza A (H1N1) or swine flu, a spokesman said.

"This measure is taken in order to prevent swine flu virus from entering Indonesia. Passengers embarking from international airways are watched closely," Trisno Heryadi, a spokesman of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, said here on Tuesday.

Officers of the airport's quarantine health unit in cooperation with the health ministry, would conduct monitoring of the temperature of foreign and as well Indonesian passengers upon their arrival at Terminal II E and II D, he said.

"We use thermal scanners to detect the temperature (of passengers) in anticipation of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Singapore Flu or swine flu virus," he said.

The airport's authorities would only carry out the monitoring and detection of passenger's temperature, and the handling in case there is a suspect would be conducted by the health ministry, he said.

"The airport's authorities will only carry out a control. If there is a passenger detected (with swine flu virus), he/she will be isolated and the health ministry will do the examination," he said.

Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie said on Monday (June 29), the government would apply certain fixed procedures to prevent influenza A (H1N1) or swine flu during international events to take place in Indonesia this year.

"In the coming few months , there will two international events involving many foreign participants, namely 'Sail Bunaken' in Manado, and an AIDS Conference in Bali. Special measures will be applied to the events to prevent the spread of this disease (swine flu)," the minister said after chairing a ministerial coordination meeting on the Influenza A (H1N1) prevention at the minister's office.

All visitors from countries affected by swine flu will be required to pass thermal scanners installed in international airports, fill in health alert cards, and use face masks for at least three days since their arrival. ***
