RI, MALAYSIA AGREE TO INTENSIFY COMMUNICATION

Jakarta, June 30 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to intensify communication in a bid to avoid mis-perception and misunderstanding about various problems between the two countries.

The agreement was reached at a meeting between Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono and his visiting Malaysian counterpart Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi here on Tuesday.

"We talk about a possibility to increase informal visits by military and government officials, including retired senior military officers, to strengthen mutual understanding between the two countries," Sudarsono said.

Speaking to reporters after receiving Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi, Sudarsono said they agreed to soothe the tension at Ambalat block.

"Especially for Ambalat issue, we agreed to soothe the tension by fixing the patrol border of navy and maritime police of the two countries to avoid mis-perception of border intrusion committed by each side," Sudarsono said.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Defense Minister Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi expressed hope that with the intensive communication, all problems including the Ambalat issue would be solved immediately in the near future.

"There will be a technical meeting between Indonesia and Malaysia in July to solve the Ambalat problem," the Malaysian defense minister said.

Hamidi agreed that during the negotiation process, the show of forces from the two countries should be conducted in accordance with the both parties' agreement.

He said a measurable show of force should be conducted at the border which has been agreed in order to avoid the perception of border intrusion by each side.

About the agreed zone for a joint patrol at Ambalat Block, the two countries defense ministers were in one accord to let it up to each military commander and maritime police.

"To avoid mis-perception and misunderstanding, we need intensive communication between military and state officials, community figures and retired senior army offices from the two countries," Hamidi said, adding that with common perception, all problem could be solved in a cool atmosphere.***
