RP7 TRILLION INCREASE IN DEFENSE BUDGET REALISTIC: MINISTER

Jakarta, June 30 (ANTARA) - Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said a Rp7 trillion increase in defense budget is realistic.

"We often propose a budget of Rp100 trillion but it always depends of a ceiling decided by the ministry of finance," the defense minister said here on Tuesday.

He said that it would be seen whether priority would still be given to the people's prosperity and economic sectors in the coming five years.

"If the answer is yes, then a budget increase of Rp7 trillion would be realistic," he said.

Sudarsono made the remarks after a meeting with Malaysian Defense Minister Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi.

He said that the important thing in the defense management is the management and supervision in the use of the existing funds.

"It should not happen that because the budget is limited then many aircraft and helicopter accidents would occur. We should be careful," he aid.

The minister said that although the budget was limited, if the management could be carried out properly and meet the target, the maintenance of the main armaments could be maximized.

He said that there were still leakages in the management of defense budget in various units, both in the defense ministry and the defense forces.

"I still see leakages there," he said.

Last month, the ministry of defense said it would likely receive an additional budget of between Rp5 trillion and Rp6 trillion in 2010.

Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said after a limited cabinet meeting at the presidential office that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had agreed at the meeting that the ministry's budget had to be increased in 2010.

"Although we were also of the view that the ideal budget of around Rp120 trillion a year would never be met because of the current crisis and budget shortage," he said.

He said the government had agreed in the next two years there must be a rise in the ministry's budget aimed at promoting operational readiness and maintenance of equipment."***
