JAPAN DONATES US$62 MILLION TO ASEAN
Jakarta, June 30 (ANTARA)- Japan through its chamber of commerce representative in ASEAN, has contributed funds amounting to US$62 million to deal with the impact of the global financial crisis in ASEAN member countries.
"Details of the utilization of the financial assistance have not been discussed but we very much hope this contribution can help ASEAN member countries in facing the present difficult economic situation," Mitsuko Ito, counselor of Japan-ASEAN Cooperation, said here on Tuesday.
The close cooperation between Japan and ASEAN economically and politically has prompted the Japanese government to help the organization's 10 members countries, he said.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) groups Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singpore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Mynamar and Laos.
In addition to the financial assistance, several Japanese business communities operating in ASEAN member states held a meeting with ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, last June 29, 2009.
The business dialogue with the Japanese private sector was aimed at promoting trade and investment in the region.
The meeting was the second after the first one held in Bangkok, Thailand, last year, according to Mitsuko.
In the meeting between the ASEAN Secretary General and the Japanese private businessmen, they discussed among other things an intention to help promote ASEAN in otehr Asian countries through the Japanese companies' Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in ASEAN member states.
"The promotion of ASEAN in other countries is important because it could raise the organization's popuolarity and attaract more investors to the region," he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman and CEO of the Japanese External Trade Organization (JETRO), Yasuo Hayashi, said that by conveying the messages of the Japanese private sector, through the ASEAN Secretariat, to the authorities in the ASEAN Member States, the potential of the region would be maximized.
A Memorandum of Understanding between the ASEAN Secretariat and JETRO was signed on the occasion focusing on four key areas of cooperation.
The four key areas are to strengthen the human resources capacity in ASEAN and the Secretariat; to improve the investment climate in ASEAN; to expand trade and business opportunities between Japan and ASEAN; and to alleviate poverty and narrow the development gap within ASEAN. ***
