ONLY ONE TERROR SUSPECT AMONG ARRESTED PEOPLE : POLICE

Jakarta, June 30 (ANTARA) - The head of the national police's criminal investigation department, Commissioner General Susno Duaji, said only one of a number of people arrested recently was declared a suspected terrorist.

"The police anti-terror unit (Densus 88) recently arrested a number of people but only one of them was linked to terrorist suspects captured in Palembang recently," he said.

He said five others were merely linked to general crimes, and not terrorism, such as violating immigration laws and using fake documents and IDs.

He said the police could not confirm their nationalities yet.

"What is clear is that they are foreign nationals. They claimed to come from Singapore but they could not show Singapaporean passports. Neither could they prove they were Indonesian citizens." he said.

Therefore, he said, the police would inform the neighboring country about them.

Susno said the five foreigners were still being investigated and would be brought to court like for similar other cases.

He said initially the five were arrested for alleged terrorism
but after questioning only one of them, an Indonesian citizen, was found involved in terrorism.

Susno did not mention his name or the names of the others who had been arrested.

Densus 88 arrested several people in Cilacap, Banjarnegara and Lampung for alleged connections to terrorism.
