IMMIGRATION CHASING 13 ESCAPED ILLEGAL AFGHANS

Medan, June 30 (ANTARA) - The immigration office in Medan, North Sumatra, is still conducting a search for 13 illegal immigrants from Afghanistan who escaped from quarantine on Sunday, June 28.

The head of the office, Langkarnana, told newsmen here on Tuesday an immigration team was cooperating with the regional police in an effort to capture the immigrants.

The search was being done in hotels, the airport, bus terminals and the seaport but so far they have not been located, he said.

He said the office believed a third party was involved in their escape because all the escapees had left behind all their belongings, including their clothes.

He said they might probably also escape because they had lost their patience to wait for the result of the immigration office's efforts to send them to a third country, namely Australia.

Langkarnana said his office had sent data and files about the immigrants to the central office for a follow-up. He said the process was long because of a lot of documents the central office had to manage.

He denied opinions which said that the office had released the immigrants on purpose so that they would not become a burden for the office.

He said the immigration office had protected them so far and met their daily needs to avoid opinions from the international community that Indonesia had neglected immigrants.

He said it was impossible for the immigrants to be deported to their home country due to safety concern because of the ongoing conflict in their country.

In view of that he said Indonesia had to protect them and even help them leave for Australia which is their place of destination.

He said if captured they would be taken to the central immigration office to avoid them to repeat their action.

He said they had so far been accommodated at an archive warehouse because the quarantine could only accommodate three people.
