RI'S BADMINTON PERFORMANCE DOWN : TOP SHUTTLER

Manado, N Sulawesi, June 30 (ANTARA) - Indonesian top shuttler Taufik Hidayat admitted here on Tuesday that the country's performance in badminton had dropped.

He said lack of new blood and governmental attention had contributed to the decline.

"Perhaps coaches are still hesitating to field junior players. That is why they always send the same players and there is no progress in achievements," he said on the sidelines of a Milo Badminton School Competition.

He said many Indonesian athletes including badminton players had moved abroad because their future in the country was not certain and almost unpromising.

Asked about his care about the situation Taufik said he had seen a lot of talented children and if possible he would ask them to join his training center. He admitted that they had to pass complicated stages before they could join his training center.
Taufik said he chose North Sulawesi, particularly Manado, for his tour because he wished to spread badminton achievements also to outside Java.

Milo brand manager Leonard Darma Bimbauin meanwhile said they had cooperated with Taufik because he was the country's badminton icon.

"We believe his name will not fade in the next five to six years. So we have chosen him because he is still a guarantee," he said.

Bambuin also said Milo had chosen sports competition for school children because the drink was identical with sports and it wished to demonstrate its care on sports and school children.

The head of the North Sulawesi regional office of the ministry of sports and youth affairs, Royke Mewoh, said he hoped the event could be done not only once in three or four years but every year.

He said the region had a lot of athletes with good achievements that had always been taken by Jakarta.

The Taufik Hidayat cup badminton competition until July 1, 2009 was participated in by elementary and junior high school students.
