BEI INDEX OPENS SLIGHTLY HIGHER THURSDAY MORNING

Jakarta, July 2 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) opened slightly higher here on Thursday morning as investors actively hunted for small-cap shares, especially banking and telecommunication shares.

The BEI Index started 15.354 points or 0.75 percent higher to 2,075.381 and the LQ-45 index went up 3.093 points or 0.92 percent to 401.811 points.

The Indonesian stocks were boosted by purchases of small-cap shares and gains of BRI, BCA, Telkom, and Indosat shares, Ahmad Riyadi, a stock broker of PT Millennium Danatama Securities, said here on Thursday.

The sell-offs of the small-cap shares were bolstered by a report issued by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) which revealed a sharp decrease in the annual inflation rate from 6.04 percent to 3.65 percent, he said.

Besides, the smooth and peaceful implementation of the electoral campaign activities in the runup to the upcoming presidential election prompted investors to be active in the domestic stock market, he explained.

Foreign investors got more confident that Indonesia was still a potential market which could be explored further, he said.

He believed that the stock market would further move upward boosting the BEI index to reach the level of 2,100 points.

"We are optimistic that the domestic stock market is still positive
especially banking shares as Bank Indonesia (BI) might likely lower its BI Rate again," he said.

Among shares that surged at the Indonesian bourse were state telecommunication company PT Telkom shares that went up Rp150 to Rp8.050, state telecommunication company PT Indosat shares which jumped Rp50 to Rp5,100 per share, Inco shares that added Rp125 to Rp4,250 per share, state bank BRI shares which advanced Rp100 to Rp6,500, BCA shares that rose Rp50 to Rp3,650 per share, Antam shares that increased Rp50 to Rp2,100 and P Gas shares which climbed Rp75 to Rp3,325 per share.***
