OSCE chairwoman to discuss in Baku democratic changes & Karabakh

BAKU, July 2 (Itar-Tass) - Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, OSCE present chairwoman, will discuss in Azerbaijan on Thursday development of democratic processes and a settlement of the Karabakh problem during a series of negotiations.

She arrived in Baku on Wednesday during a tour of South Caucasian
countries.
According to diplomatic sources, Bakoyannis will hold talks with her
Azerbaijan counterpart Elmar Mamedyarov, will meet President Ilkham Aliev,
parliament speaker Oktai Asadov and leaders of several political parties.
It is supposed that development of democratic processes in Azerbaijan
and a settlement of the Karabakh conflict will be the main topics of talks
and meetings in Baku of the OSCE present chairwoman. As the Greek foreign
minister, Bakoyannis will also discuss development and deepening of
relations between Athens and Baku as well as expansion of cooperation in
the energy sphere.
The Greek foreign minister made a statement on the eve of her visit to
Baku, stressing that "Azerbaijan plays a key role in maintaining security
and stability in the South Caucasus and over the entire OSCE territory".
Turning to the Karabakh problem, the OSCE chairwoman expressed
satisfaction with the development of the situation in the negotiation
process which is conducted with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group.
"Discussions contain a positive impetus which is a vitally important
element for subsequent negotiations," Bakoyannis said.

.Polish pres to discuss economic questions in Baku.

BAKU, July 2 (Itar-Tass) - The Azerbaijan-Polish top-level talks will
discuss development of economic cooperation, including in the energy
sphere, and regional questions in Baku on Thursday. Polish President Lech
Kaczynski arrives in Baku in the afternoon on a two-day official visit.
The Polish head of state is expected to meet Azerbaijan President
Ilkham Aliev right after his arrival at first in the tete-a-tete format
and then with the participation of the two countries' delegations.
The two leaders are supposed to concentrate on expansion and deepening
of bilateral relations, implementation of projects of piping Caspian gas
and oil to Europe via the Polish territory, including by the
Odessa-Brody-Plotsk-Gdansk pipeline, participation of Polish companies in
developing Azerbaijan gas and oil and cooperation within Euro-Atlantic
structures.
The sides plan to sign several documents by the results of talks,
including the political and energy spheres.
During the visit, Kaczynski will also meet Prime Minister Artur
Rasi-zade and parliament speaker Oktai Asadov. The Azerbaijan side will
stage a ceremony of conferring on the Polish president the title of an
honorary doctor of Baku Slavic University, the largest centre of Slavic
studies in the South Caucasus.

.Turkmenistan rounds off nomination of candidates to municipal bodies.

ASHGABAT, July 2 (Itar-Tass) - Turkmenistan rounded off on Wednesday
nomination of candidates to local bodies of self-government. The elections
will be held on July 26.
According to the Turkmen Central Commission on Elections and
Referendums, a total of 12,455 candidates were nominated for 6,220 seats
at local bodies of self-government.
Two or more people contest every seat virtually in all constituencies.
Candidates include workers in various sectors of the national economy -
public education, health, the sphere of social maintenance, culture and
agricultural workers. Most of them represent the Democratic Party of
Turkmenistan, non-government organisations and associations.
The advertising campaign will start after regional election
commissions complete registration. All claimants are granted equal rights
and possibilities to present the electorate their proposals on
implementing large-scale development programmes in localities, above all,
the National Programme of the Turkmen president on transforming social and
every-day conditions of population in regions.
National observers monitor progress in the election campaign. The
Central Election Commission has registered over 1,500 observers from
non-government organisations and 10 from the Turkmen National Institute of
Democracy and Human Rights at the Turkmen president.
