RI NEEDS TO STRENGTHEN ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY

Jakarta, July 2 (ANTARA) - Indonesia needs to strengthen its economic diplomacy which is based on the flow of financial and structural adjustment, a senior diplomat said here on Thursday.

"Economic development in Indonesia should not rely on export and import value," former Indonesian Ambassador to the United Nations Makarim Wibisono said.

Makarim made the statement at a seminar on "Global Economic Crisis: Opportunities, Policy & Diplomacy Response" at Paramadina University campus in Jakarta.

According to Makarim, the strengthening of economic diplomacy would encourage other countries to trust in Indonesia in making investment.

He said one thing to do was to raise common idea in every international meeting and to make impression that Indonesia was consistent to all countries.

Makarim said that other countries had a habit to record every discussion in every international meeting and therefore if the idea that raise by Indonesia was different from that from other countries, Indonesia would be considered to be inconsistent.

In addition, he said Indonesia should create conducive trade and investment climate in the country.

"But we have to be careful with money laundering practices committed by other countries," Makarim warned.

Commenting on human resources development, Makarim said Indonesia should as well prepare it to improve its performance in international diplomacy.

"Indonesia should prepare its human resources to improve bilateral, regional, and international diplomacy," former Indonesian Ambassador to the United Nations Makarim Wibisono said at a seminar on "Global Financial Crisis: Opportunities, Policies and Diplomatic Responses".

The seminar, attended by Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono, was held at the Paramadina University campus here on Thursday.

On the occasion, the senior diplomat disclosed that the country was facing various obstacles in preparing qualified human resources who were able to conduct diplomacy and relations with other countries.

In addition, Makaraim explained that the country should be able to develop a new structure in the government to a bigger role at Asian and international levels.

He said Indonesia could adopt the institutional structure adhered to by a number of countries which played a strong diplomatic role such as Australia and Canada. The two countries applied the unification of the foreign ministry and foreign trade ministry. ***
