PDIP EXECUTIVE: KPU HAS BECOME "ARROGANT, CONCEITED"

Jakarta, July 2 (ANTARA) - Tjahjo Kumolo, an executive of the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP), said the General Elections Commission (KPU) had become "arrogant and conceited in its attitudes."

"In my view, the KPU has become disrespectful of the people, of other state institutions and the House of Representatives (DPR). In fact, it has become arrogant and conceited in its attitudes," Kumolo, chairman of the PDIP's faction in the DPR, said here on Thursday.

He said the KPU had also shown these attitudes in a meeting with the DPR last Wednesday (July 1).

Despite the public criticisms about problems regarding the fixed voters' lists (DPTs) and state-owned company officials serving as members of presidential candidates' success teams, the KPU had remained indifferent and was always hiding behind regulations, he said.

"Are they not aware of their attitudes or is it a part of a conspiracy to serve a certain interest?" Kumolo, head of the Megawati-Prabowo success team, wondered.

Kumolo, a member of the House's Commission I, said there were indications of systematic cheating in the runup to the upcoming presidential election.

"For instance, it has been found that 49 million eligible voters have not been included in DPTs. To us, it is an indication of a systematic effort to advantage presidential candidate SBY," he said.

He suspected that the eligible voters who were not included in the DPT were supporters of other presidential candidates, namely Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto and Megawati-Prabowo.

He urged all elements of the public to prevent the KPU from being partisan.

"KPU as a neutral institution must be saved to make the results of the presidential election really objective , democratic and dignified," he said.

He also regretted the case of banners produced by KPU suggesting to the people to chose candidate number two (the SBY-Boediono pair).

"The General Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) and its personnel must seriously investigate this," he said.

Indonesia will hold its second direct presidential election on July 8, 2009.

Incumbent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Democratic Party (PD) pairs with Boediono, is competing with other candidates, namely Jusuf Kalla and his running mate retired General Wiranto, as well as with former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and her running mate retired general Prabowo in the upcoming presidential race.***
