RI INVITES 50 SENIOR ASIAN OFFICIALS TO WITNESS PRESIDENTIAL POLL

Jakarta, July 3 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has invited 50 senior officials from 27 Asian countries to directly witness the implementation of the presidential election scheduled for July 8, 2009, through the Election Visitor Program (EVP).

"The EVP participants will directly witness the implementation of the presidential election at several polling stations in Tangerang, Jogyakarta, Malang, Denpasar, Makassar, and Palembang," Teuku Faizasyah, a spokesman of the Indonesian foreign affairs ministry, said here on Friday.

The senior officials will be from Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Kuwait, Laos, Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, New Zealand, Singapore, Srilanka, Thailand, Timor Leste, The United Arab Emiratesb, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

The Election Visitor Program will be organized from July 6 to 9, 2009, by the foreign affairs ministry in cooperation with the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD).

Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirajuda will officially open the program at Airport Sheraton Hotel, on July 6.

They will among other things participate in a workshop on "Indonesia Presidential Election: A Democratic Assessment," which will discuss the reform progress and political developments in Indonesia.

Among speakers of the workshop will be Prof Dewi Fortuna Anwar, Prof Bahtiar Effendi, Dr Rizal Sukma, Denny Indrayana PhD, Ramlan Surbakti, and Saiful Muzani.

The EVP is a follow up of recommendations issued in the Bali Democracy Forum, which was held on December 10-11, 2008, which recommended modernization and development of politic in Asia.

"Indonesia is in a good position to share experiences and at the same time get experiences from other Asian countries. Therefore, the upcoming presidential election is an appropriate forum to share experiences," he said.

Indonesia will hold its second direct presidential election on July 8, 2009, with a total of 176,367,056 eligible voters.
