JK-WIRANTO CAMP TO SUE ANDI MALARANGENG

Surabaya, Indonesia, July 4 (ANTARA) - The Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto (JK-Win) success team will sue Andi Alifian Malarangeng for his statement saying it was not the right time for someone from South Sulawesi to be president, a spokesman said.

"We, the JK-Wiranto team will sue Dr Andi Alifian Malarangeng for his statement as a lesson in democracy," Yuddy Chrisnandi said at Juanda airport here on Saturday.

He said Malarangeng's statement smacked of racism and could cause widespread public unrest.

"This is not a matter of politeness or the like, but a matter of racial discrimination. This is a serious human right violation," he said.

He said in Law no. 40/2004, article 4, on the eradication of racial discrimination, it was stated that there must be no restriction based on race or ethnicity through written or spoken words.

Anybody violating the article was liable to prosecution, he said.

Yuddy Chrisnandi said there were at least three racist statements made by the SBY-Boediono team in the runup to the presidential race.

First, it was when Ruhut Sitompul said that people of Arab descent had never helped the Indonesian nation.

The second instance was Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY)'s reference to "the danger of black hair capitalism" and the third instance was Andi Malarangeng's satetement.

"These statements indicate disrespect for diversity and civility and it's racial discrimination," he said.

Andi Malarangeng's statement also prompted a protest by residents of Makassar, South Sulawesi, deploring the statement.

In the final-round debate among the three presidential candidates on Thursday evening, Jusuf Kalla, who was most vocal, said discrimination would undermine democracy.

"Indonesia is based on plurality. The evidence for this is all the pictures of the President and Vice President, which flank our symbol of pluralism, the Garuda," he said.

Kalla's words may have been a reference to a statement made recently by one of Yudhoyono's campaigners, the current government spokesman Andi Malarangeng, who said people from South Sulawesi were not yet fit to lead the country.

"Anyone can be a leader. The view that a certain ethnic group or race cannot lead is dangerous because it dates back to the dark ages," said Kalla, the only non-Javanese candidate among the three. ***
