RETIRED MILITARY /POLICE PERSONNEL PRAY FOR SBY
Jakarta, July 4 (ANTARA) - Thousands of military and police retirees have prayed for the victory of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the upcoming presidential race.
The prayer was conducted in a gathering of military and police retirees and veterans which was held at Indoor tennis hall in Senayan, Jakarta, on Saturday, in the presence of presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and his spouse, Mrs. Ani Yudhoyono.
Retired Lt Gen Cornel Simbolon, chairman of the gathering's organizing committee, in his opening remark said the veterans and retirees still played an important role in the life of the nation.
This was among other things proven by the fact that retired general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had been given a mandate to lead the country over the past five years, he said.
In the current presidential race, three retired generals are competing with each other, he said.
"May retired general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono be given strength, good health, and faith to continue his service to the nation and state, and to lead the country that we love," he said.
The gathering was attended by around 3,000 retired police and military officers as well as veterans and their families.
Prior to the closing of the events, four retirees representing the air force, army, navy and police, read statements expressing hopes and suggestions.
They among other things hoped that the implementation of the upcoming presidential election would be smooth and peaceful, and the neutrality of the TNI (Indonesian Defense Forces) and National Police could be guarded.
They also expressed their support for efforts to establish good governance and pro-people administration, and to fight corruption, poverty and backwardness.
In the upcoming direct presidential election, Yudhoyono-Boediono will compete with Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto (retired general), and former president Megawati Soekarnoputri-Prabowo (retired general).
The General Elections Commission (KPU) has set schedules for closed-door campaigning from June 2 to 10, and mass rallies from June 11 to July 4, 2009. The presidential elections will be held on July 8, 2009.***
