MINISTER ASKS REGIONAL AUTHORITIES TO REVITALIZE TRADITIONAL MARKETS
Jakarta, July 4 (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu has asked regional administrations to revitalize traditional markets by improving their buildings and management, in order to boost the local economies.
"In Presidential Regulation No. 112/2007 and Trade Minister's Regulation No. 53/2008, the criteria of good markets are clearly stated. We need the regional administrations' commitment to realize it," the minister said when visiting Glodok traditional market, West Jakarta, here on Saturday.
The 13,000 traditional markets existing in Indonesia currently could very much boost the people's economy, she said.
Therefore, traditional markets must be revitalized to attract more customers, the minister said.
Among the criteria of a good traditional market was cleanliness, clear grouping of fresh products and processed products, high roof, good ventilation, and comfortable conditions for visitors, she said.
In addition to the traditional markets' revitalization, she also called for relocation of street vendors operating around traditional markets in order to create healthy competition.
"Street vendors should be given a particular place, and not be banned. They should be put in order for healthy competition," the minister said.
Minister Pangestu also called on regional authorities to issue business licenses free of charge for traders, like the step taken by Solo authorities.
"Or they should be given identity cards, while they are also encouraged to make progress and have their own kiosks," she said.
The central government in June 2009 allocated stimulus funds amounting to Rp315 billion for the development of traditional markets and warehouses.
"It's now under bidding process, before the end of this year, the revitalization program of 34 traditional markets is expected to be completed," the minister said.
On the occasion, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu presented an award to Djangga Lubis, president director of Glodok traditional market, for having been able to maintain cleanliness and security at the market.***
