JAKARTA TRADITIONAL MARKETS REVITALIZATION TO FINISH IN 2015
Jakarta, July 4 (ANTARA) - Revitalization work of 151 traditional markets in Jakarta will be completed by 2015, according to Djangga Lubis, president director of Jakarta's traditional market management company.
"Of 151 traditional markets existing in Jakarta, 59 have been revitalized, both their physical buildings and management. All are expected to be completed in 2015," Djangga Lubis said here on Saturday when accompanying Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu during a visit to the Glodok traditional market in western Jakarta.
Citing an example, he said the revitalization of Glodok market started in 2001 and had been quite successful. The environmental affairs ministry presented an award to the market as the cleanest market in 2007.
The market accommodates around 650 traders and has its own waste recycling system which produces compost used to help regreen the surrounding area of the market.
Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said her ministry encouraged other regional administrations to conduct revitalization program of traditional markets in their respective region.
"We also encourage other regions to carry out traditional market revitalization programs. The budgets are not all from the central government. We also ask for the regions' commitment," the trade minister said.
Pangestu earlier asked regional administrations to revitalize traditional markets by improving their buildings and management, in order to boost the local economies.
"In Presidential Regulation No. 112/2007 and Trade Minister's Regulation No. 53/2008, the criteria of good markets are clearly stated. We need the regional administrations' commitment to realize it," the minister said when visiting Glodok traditional market, West Jakarta, here on Saturday.
The 13,000 traditional markets existing in Indonesia currently could very much boost the people's economy, she said.
The central government in June 2009 allocated stimulus funds amounting to Rp315 billion for the development of traditional markets and warehouses.
"It's now under bidding process, before the end of this year, the revitalization program of 34 traditional markets is expected to be completed," the minister said.***
