NUMBER OF CHINESE TOURIST ARRIVALS IN BALI UP 55.88 PCT
Denpasar, Indonesia, July 4 (ANTARA) - The number of Chinese tourist arrivals in Bali went up by 30,767 or 55.88 percent to 85,828 during the January-May period in 2009, from 55,061 in the same period last year.
The encouraging increase was among other things due to the opening of a direct airline route between China and Bali, Ida Komang Wisnu, head of the Bali provincial central bureau of statistics (BPS), said here on Saturday.
China ranks third on the list of the top ten of countries contributing to Bali's dollar earnings during the first five months this year, he said.
China accounted for 9.86 percent of 870,029 total foreign tourists visiting Bali during January-May 2009, which was up 9.76 percent from 792,657 tourists in the same period a year earlier.
Almost all of the Chinese tourists landed at Ngurah Rai International airport, and only one arrived by a cruiser.
Last year, a total of 131,319 Chinese tourists visited Indonesia's most famous tourist resort, up 55.82 percent from 84,278 in 2007. China ranked third after Australia and Japan. The number of Chinese and Australian tourist arrivals significantly increased, while Japan fell by 7.18 percent, Ida Komang Wisnu said.
A Chinese art delegation is taking part in the ongoing Bali Art Festival.
The number of Japanese tourist arrivals in Bali went down by 10,215 or 7.16 percent from 142,337 in the first five months of 2008 to 132,122 during the same period in 2009.
"Despite the quite drastic fall, Japanese tourists still rank second on the list of the top 10 countries contributing to Bali's tourist dollar earnings," Ida Komang Wisnu, said on Friday (July 3).
Japanese accounted for about 15.19 percent of the total number of foreign tourists visiting Bali (870,029) during the January-May period in 2009, he said.
In 2008, some 359,827 Japanese tourists visited Bali, constituting about 18.06 percent of the total number of foreign tourist arrivals on the island, which was 1,992,299.
Last year, the number of Japanese people visiting Bali rose by 7,789 people or 2.21 percent from the previous year of 352,038 people.***
