Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed honoured in Cannes

Cannes - July 5 2009 (WAM) - H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chancellor of the Hamdan bin Mohammed e-University (HBMe-U), received the Cannes Award for Education at a ceremony in Cannes in recognition of his role in the field of education in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and for leading HBMe-U. Sheikh Hamdan is in Cannes upon invitation from the Mayor of Cannes and the Cannes International Water Symposium (Symposium international de l'eau).
He is leading a delegation comprising Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Bin Juma' Al-Maktoum, Lt. General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of HBMe-U, Dr Mansour Al-Awar, director of HBMe-U, Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Shebani, director of Dubai Ruler's court, Dr Omar Mohammed Ahmed Bin Sulaiman, Governor of Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and others.
Upon arrival in Cannes, Sheikh Hamdan was received by Professor Raoul Caruba Raoul Caruba, Head of the Organizing Committee of the 5th Cannes International Water Symposium (Symposium international de l'eau), Dr Jan Sadlak, Director of the UNESCO-CEPES (the European Centre for Higher Education/Centre Europ en pour l'Enseignement Sup rieur) and representatives of the United Nations University, the vice president of the French National Assembly and the Mayor of Cannes.
Sheikh Hamdan and Bernard Brochand, Mayor of Cannes, at a meeting, discussed cooperation between Dubai and the French city in view of the historic relations between the UAE and France.
Sheikh Hamdan who was presented with the Cannes Gold Medal presented Bouchard with a souvenir, a painting portraying the UAE national heritage.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hamdan met the Honourable Rudy Salles of France, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of The Mediterranean (PAM) and Vice President of the French National Assembly.
In April, Sheikh Hamdan was nominated for the Cannes Award for Education in recognition of his leadership in education in the Middle East and North Africa and for founding the Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University. The Cannes International Water Symposium, which concluded its 11th edition on Friday, honoured Sheikh Hamdan for his role in the field of education in the Middle East and North Africa through leading HBMe-U.
Presenting Sheikh Hamdan with the award, the Honourable Rudy Salles of France, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) and Vice President of the French National Assembly hailed the UAE's achievements in various fields such as economy, tourism, cultural openness. He described HBMe-U as a new-generation university in the MENA region.
Later, Sheikh Hamdan attended signing ceremony of an agreement between HBMe-U and the United Nations University, Cannes City and Cannes International Water Symposium on establishing the Department of Communications and Environment at the Cannes International Institute. The new department will be tasked with developing programmes on environment and reciprocal accreditation.
Another agreement (memorandum of understanding) was signed by HBMe-U, the United Nations University and Cannes International Water Symposium on establishing the Dubai Excellence centre in environment and environmental resources.
