INDONESIA TARGETS 480,000 AUSTRALIAN TOURISTS THIS YEAR
Jakarta, July 5 (ANTARA) - Indonesia hopes to attract 480,000 Australian tourists during the Visit Indonesia Year 2009.
"We are optimistic that we will be able to achieve the target, as the domestic tourism industry is not affected by the global economic crisis," Sapta Nirwandar, director general of the tourism and cultural ministry, said here on Sunday.
A total of 165,137 Australian tourists visited Indonesia in January to May 2009, up around 34,338 or 26.25 percent from 130,799 in the same period last year.
The tourism and cultural ministry has organized a number of tourism promotions in Australia, including through a music performance by the Twilite Orchestra led by Addie MS entitled "Indonesia A Touch of Harmony" at the Concert Hall Opera House in Sydney, Australia, on July 21, 2009.
"A symphony has a universal value and is very effective as a 'cultural diplomacy' in order to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries," he said.
The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in the first five months of 2009 reached 2.41 million, up 1.69 percent from 2.37 million during the January- May 2008.
In addition to the Australian tourists, the number of Middle Eastern tourists increased by around 42.04 percent, Europe (10.23 percent) and China (18.96 percent).
Meanwhile, the number of Asian tourists visiting Indonesia decreased during the January-May 2009 period. The number of Singaporean tourists went down 6.72 percent, Japan (13.80 percent, and South Korea (2728 percent).
"So tourism in Asia is mostly hit (by the global crisis)," he said.
Sapta was optimistic that Indonesia would be able to attract 6.5 million foreign tourists this year, from 6.4 million last year.
Last year, some 225 million Indonesians traveled domestically and spent a total of Rp123.1 trillion, he said.
"Tourism and Cultural Minister Jero Wacik calls on our people to travel domestically in the current school holiday period," he said. ***2***
