ELECTION OBSERVERS TO VISIT KPU OVER VOTERS' LIST PROBLEM
Jakarta, July 5 (ANTARA) - 2009 Presidential election observers from independent elements will visit the General Elections Commission (KPU) on Monday to ask for explanations about problems with regard to the voters' list (DPT) and the alleged biased attitude of the election body.
"We, the 2009 presidential elections observers, will visit the KPU on Monday (July 6, 2009) to ask for explanations about the DPT problem," Ray Rangkuti, coordinator of the independent election observers, who is also director of the Civil Circle for Indonesia (Lima), said here on Sunday.
He said that the KPU had fixed the number of registered voters at 176 million for the 2009 presidential elections while there were still 25 million who had not yet been registered or included in the DPT.
Election observers from the independent elements included chairman of the Democratic Research Institute and State Prosperity (Pedoman) Fadjroel Rahman, chairman of the Indonesia Green Institute (IHI) Cholid Muhammad, director of the Reform Institute Yudi Latif and secretary general of the People's Coalition for Fishery Justice (KIARA) M Riza Damanik.
Ray said that KPU was considered to be not transparent with regard to the DPT problem because there were still a lot of people in East Java who had not been registered in the fixed voter's list.
Besides, the KPU, as the organizer of the elections, was considered not neutral because its banners on the popularization of election ticking system directed voters to cast votes for a certain candidate.
"We are disappointed with how the presidential elections are organized this year. In 2004, we were viewed by the international world as a good example," he said.
He said his side had no interest with the three presidential candidates, but with the upholding of the people's constitutional rights so that the DPT should not be manipulated.***1***
