FISH CATCH IN INDONESIA EXCEEDS NORMAL POTENTIAL
Jakarta, July 5 (ANTARA) - The average annual fish catch in Indonesian waters now reaches 7.9 million tons, exceeding the normal potential of 6.4 million tons, an activist said.
Of the 7.9 million fish catch, 4.9 million tons are produced by fishermen and 3 million tons were caught by poachers, secretary general of the People's Coalition for Fishery Justice (KIARA), Rizal said here on Sunday.
He said that of the 6.4 million tons of fish potentials, about 80 percent could be produced while the remaining 20 percent should be allowed to develop as a reserve for the following year's catch.
The reserves were to meet the fish consumption of the Indonesian people which totaled 250 million. In reality however fish production continued to be raised to meet for exports to Japan, he said.
Japan fresh a great deal of fish as its people's fish consumption per capita reaches 126 kg per annum, and it has been relying on Indonesia for its fish consumption. After all, Indonesia and Japan signed an agreement on this matter in 2007.
The Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA) will put the fish potentials in the country under a critical condition, he said.
Rizal said that not only fish, all Indonesia's fish resources would be absorbed by Japan so that in 2015 Indonesia was expected to become a big importer of the products.
The indication, he said, could be observed when Japan cut its import duty on Indonesia's fish last year.
As a result, the volume of Indonesia's headless black tiger shrimp exports to Japan increased from 2,421 metric tons in 2008 to 2,937 metric tons in March this year, or an increase of 14 percent from those in 2007.
Rizal said that the zero import duty stimuli given by Japan to Indonesia was a trigger that could boost the creation of a fish crisis in Indonesia.***2***
