GARUDA READY TO FLY TO AMSTERDAM AGAIN

Surabaya, E Java, July 5 (ANTARA) - National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is ready to fly to Amsterdam in the first semester of 2010 after the European Union Air Safety Committee lifted its ban on four Indonesian airlines to fly to members of the European Union, a Garuda executive said.

"Amsterdam is the first city Garuda will fly to in Europe as Indonesia has historical links with the Netherlands," Garuda Senior Manager for eastern Indonesia regions, Suranto said here on Sunday.

Besides, the market in Amsterdam is very potential, he said adding that the other potential city is Frankfurt in Germany.

"We once covered the Amsterdam route but we closed it at the end of 2004 because we considered it not so competitive," Suranto said.

The EU Air Safety Committee has lifted its ban on four Indonesian airlines, namely Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines, Airfast Indonesia and Premi Air.

Garuda Communications Chief Pujobroto said on Friday the EU Air Safety Committee had recommended the lifting of the flight ban on the four Indonesian carriers.

Pujobroto made the remarks on Friday in response to the decisions reached by the committee at its three-day meeting which ended in Brussels, Belgium, on Thursday
One of the decisions is a recommendation to lift the EU flight ban on Garuda Indonesia, Mandala, AirFast and Premi Air.
The decision will formally be issued nearly two weeks after being translated into 22 EU official languages and signed by the board of commissioners for transportation affairs.

Pujobroto said Garuda hailed the decision and would resume its flights to Europe particularly to Amsterdam in the first phase.

It would take nearly nine months for the national flag carrier to make preparations for the flight resumption, he said.

He said Garuda was still undecided about the types of planes to resume the European flights.***2***
