HOME MINISTER HOPES ELECTION TO PROCEED PEACEFULLY
Jakarta, July 8 (ANTARA) - Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto expressed hope that Wednesday's presidential elections would run fairly and peacefully.
"I hope all eligible voters will exercise their voting right in the present presidential election," the minister said after casting his ballot at Polling Station 001 at the Widya Chandra ministers' housing complex here on Wednesday.
He said he was convinced the election committee members in the field would carry out their tasks professionally so that there would be no voters using double identity cards in casting their ballots.
The minister made the remarks when commenting on the possibility of voters using double identity cards in the election, saying that its likelihood was vary small.
"It depends on the organizers at the polling stations but I believe they are able to work professionally in the field," the minister said.
After casting his vote, the minister would make an aerial observation of the implementation of the election with the police chief, the General Elections Commission (KPU) chairman and legislators in Pandeglang (Banten) and Bogor (West Java).
Other ministers who also cast their ballots at the Widya Chandra housing complex included Social Affairs Minister Bachtiar Chamsyah, Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman and Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda.
Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Hidayat Nurwahid also cast his ballot at the same polling station.
Some 176,367,056 eligible voters including 1,133,738 Indonesians overseas are expected to go to polling stations on Wednesday to give their vote in the country's second direct presidential election.
Three presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs are competing in the election, namely former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and her running mate retired general Prabowo Subianto, incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono, and incumbent vice president M Jusuf Kalla and retired general Wiranto.***1***
