KALLA WARNS AGAINST MANIPULATION OF ELECTORAL FIGURES

Jakarta, July 8 (ANTARA) - Presidential candidate Jusuf Kalla said nobody should try to manipulate the figures in ongoing popular vote because doing so would have dangerous repercussions.

"The important thing is that no one should try to manipulate the electoral figures because it will somehow be discovered and then the consequences will be dangerous to the people," Kalla said after casting his ballot at TPS 019 (polling station 019), Taman Suropati, Menteng, Central Jakarta on Wednesday.

Previously, Kalla who is also incumbent vice president, said that verification carried out on fixed electoral rolls (DPT) by the General Elections Commission (KPU) in 69 districts indicated duplications of 11 million voters' names.

"If the duplication of voters' names happened due to administrative problems it would be OK but if it happens due to deliberate intention it is a crime," he said.

He expressed his hope that no party would use the 11 million duplicated names of voters in Wednesday's presidential elections.

Kalla said that problem of duplications in the DPT had been raised since the beginning. That's why, even though at the last minutes, we push for the verification of the DPTs.

Asked whether sanction is needed against the KPU, Kalla said let the process decide it. "After all, members of the House of Representatives (DPR) had submitted an inquiry proposal," he said.

Some 176,367,056 voters, including 1,133,738 Indonesians living abroad, are expected to go to polling stations on Wednesday to vote for the country's next president and vice president.

Three presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs are competing in the country's second direct presidential election 2009 since the reform era starting in 1998.

The competing candidates are former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and her pair retired general Prabowo Subianto, incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono, and incumbent vice president M Jusuf Kalla and retired general Wiranto.***1***
