INDONESIA'S FIRST NATIONAL CEMENT MUSEUM TO BE BUILT IN PADANG

Padang, July 7 (ANTARA) - State cement producer PT Semen Padang will build an Indonesian national cement museum in where Indarung I is now standing on 4.8 hectares of land in Padang, West Sumatra.

The Indarung I plant will be built into the first cement museum in Indonesia, president director of PT Semen Padang Endang Irzal said here Tuesday.

As Indarung I stopped operating in 1998, it will be built into a national cement museum, he said.

Indarung I was Indonesia's very first cement plant the construction of which was started in 1910. The plant's maximum production had reached 300,000 tons per year.

In the last years of its operation, Indarung I's cement production reached a maximum of only 90 percent of its installed capacity, and in stages its operations were halted, and it stopped production 1998, he added.

He added that Indarung I stopped operating also because its machinery had stopped operating economically.

Its machinery operated with "wet" technology, while today similar machinery have started operating with "dry" technology.

The design and planning of the project were carried out by 128 senior architects and architectural students from seven countries grouped in the Modern Asian Architecture Network (MAAN).

The 128 architects and architectural students came from Malaysia, Thaiwan, China, Japan, India, South Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia, attending a workshop from June 28 to July 6, 2009 at the Indarung I plant.

They came from the Bandung Institute of Technology, Brawijaya University, Bung Hatta University, University Of Tokyo, Yonsei University and Taylor's College School.

The construction of the Indonesian cement museum will mark the 100th founding anniversary of PT SP (1910-2010).
