FINANCE MINISTER: PEACEFUL POLL TO BE GOOD FOR ECONOMY

Jakarta, July 8 (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said a peaceful implementation of the presidential election, in one or two rounds, will have a positive impact on the national economy.

The contribution of the ongoing presidential election to the economy was smaller than that of the April 2009 legislative election, the minister said here on Wednesday.

"Because in the legislative election, the candidates ran into the thousands and they were spread in numerous regions. While for the presidential election, the presidential candidates just picked certain points and there were no big campaigns. They tended to make rhetoric in the mass media. It was good for the media," the minister said.

The legislative election which was held in April 2009, boosted consumption growth to 5.8 percent and domestic economic growth in the first quarter to 4.4 percent.

Sri Mulyani said investors were currently closely watching the implementation of the ongoing presidential election.

Investors had their own views on the process of the presidential race for their consideration in taking decisions, according to the minister. They also followed the controversy on the fixed eligible voter lists (DPTs), she said.

"They have also included this factor. The investors put a big amount of money, so in the intelligence, they are more careful. They don't just look at one or two persons, but they look comprehensively. And they look for the safest. So, they will watch this DPT problem, a discourse on possible postponement of the election, and one or two rounds (of the presidential election). They will include all considerations in making decisions," she said.

Meanwhile, the minister said in the first semester of this year, the country's economic growth rate is estimated at 4.1 percent, while in the second semester it is expected to be higher, namely 4.6 percent.
