SBY'S VICTORY SPELLED 'DEATH' OF PRIMORDIAL POLITICS : LSI
Jakarta, July 0 (ANTARA) - The Indonesia Survey Institute (LSI) said in its exit poll release the outcome of Wednesday's presidential poll had proven primordial politics in Indonesia had died out.
"Many voters outside Java voted for presidential and vice presidential candidates Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and Bodiono although they are Javanese," Burhanuddin Muhtadi, founder and senior researcher of (LSI), said here on Thursday.
He said most of members of the largest Muslim organizations, (NU) and Muhammadiyah, also voted for the SBY-Boediono presidential ticket.
Muhtadi said the support from the largest Muslim organizations for a certain presidential candidate was not followed by their masses.
Muhtadi who is also a lecturer on political sciences at Paramadiana University said LSI had conducted the exit poll to learn the characteristics of the supporters of SBY-Boediono, Mega-Pro and JK-WIN presidential pairs.
The characteristics were surveyed based on their preference to religion, ethnicity, gender, mass organizations, political parties and elections.
On the gender issue, it turned out that female voters tended to vote for SBY. First voters also tended to vote for SBY.
In the meantime, most male voters voted for the Mega-Pro duo While in the regional aspect, the SBY-Boediono ticket gained most votes almost evenly in all provinces outside Java.
On the ethnicity aspect, the JK-WIN pair gained minimum support from Javanese voters, he said.
Some 176,367,056 eligible voters in 33 provinces, including 1,133,738 Indonesians in 17 Indonesian embassies overseas were expected to cast their votes on Wednesday in the country's second direct presidential election.
More than 541,000 polling stations were erected throughout Indonesia. In Jakarta and some other regions, the presidential poll was implemented from 8 am to 1 pm Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB).
Three presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs competed in the election, namely former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and her running mate retired general Prabowo Subianto, incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono, and incumbent vice president M Jusuf Kalla and retired general Wiranto.***1***
