PRABOWO DENIES BREACHING CAMPAIGN SILENCE PERIOD
Jakarta, July 9 (ANTARA) - Vice presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto has denied an allegation that he made a political speech last Tuesday (July 7) in the course of the electoral campaign silence period.
The campaign team of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono (SBY-Boediono pair) had reported to the Election Monitoring Board (Bawaslu) that Prabowo made a political speech on July 7, 2009.
"On Tuesday, July 7,I was at home but I did not make any political speech " Prabowo told reporters at the Bawaslu office here on Thursday.
Prabowo made the statement in relation with Bawaslu's summons for him to clarify an accusation made by the SBY-Boediono campaign team against him.
"I do not understand whether it is a democracy or democratic dynamics, and my every activity was covered by the media," Prabowo said, adding that starting from 7 a.m. until the evening everyday his activities were covered by the media.
Meanwhile, Prabowo's running mate Megawati Soekarnoputri also said she did not stage any campaign during the silent period as had been reported by the SBY-Boediono campaign team to Bawaslu.
"It is not true that I conducted a campaign during the silent period on July 7, 2009," Megawati said at Bawaslu office here on Thursday.
Before dozens of print and electronic media reporters, Megawati said she was summoned by Bawaslu to give clarification following a report from the campaign team of presidential and vice presidential candidates No. 2 about an election rule violation.
Megawati was accompanied by Pramono Anung and Gayus Lumbuun when she came to the Bawaslu office.
Megawati said she could not give the details of the clarification on the report because it was still being processed by Bawaslu and the result would be announced to the public.
"I came to fulfill Bawaslu's invitation and to set an example. If we are summoned, we have to come because we want to respect the institution in carrying out its tasks," Megawati said.
According to Megawati, she got the invitation from Bawaslu on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, to come to and give clarification about the report that she had conducted a campaign during the silent period
On the occasion, she also called on all people of Indonesia to respect the law. ***1***
