FIVE TOLIHARA KPU OFFICE ARSONISTS GIVE THEMSELVES UP
Jakarta, July 10 (ANTARA) - Five men claiming responsibility for the torching of the General Elections Commission (KPU) office of Tolikara district in Papua, gave themselves up to the local police on Friday morning.
The head of the National Police Headquarters' public relations division, Insp Gen Nanan Sukarna, said here Friday the five men reported themselves to the Tolihara police precinct at 09.00 Eastern Indonensia Time on Friday.
"They are now undergoing questioning. Two of them, YG and WO, confessed to being the instigators," Sukarna said, adding the police appreciated their action in giving themselves up.
"This is interesting. After committing the arson, they came straight to the Tolihara police precinct to surrender themselves," he said.
But until now, the police had yet to establish the motive of the torching action and the group to which the arsonists belonged. "After we have completed the investigation, we hope we can tell the public," he said.
The incident, however, had not disrupted the KPU's work in the region nor was any election logistics lost in the fire.
"Not all of the building occupied by the KPU was affected by the fire, only a few parts," he added.
The torching of the KPU office in Tolihara was the most serious disturbance that had happened following presidential polling day last July 8.
Except for the Tolihara incident, the situation immediately after the presidential election throughout the country was peaceful and orderly, he said.
Meanwhile, the acting head of the Papua Regional Police Headquarters' public relations division, Adj Sr Com Nur Habri, said there were no casualties in the Tolihara incident, only some material damage. ***4***
