Lee set to preside over 1st Cabinet meeting since taking office

SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae-myung was set to preside over his first Cabinet meeting Thursday since assuming the presidency earlier this week.

Lee is expected to stress the need for continuity in state affairs and the maintaining of public service discipline during the meeting with Cabinet members of the former Yoon Suk Yeol administration.

On Wednesday, Lee turned down resignation offers from members of the Cabinet, except for Justice Minister Park Sung-jae, to ensure continuity in state affairs, according to the presidential office.

A majority of the 21 Cabinet members are required to meet the quorum for convening Cabinet meetings. The current members are expected to maintain their roles until Lee forms a new Cabinet, which could take weeks, given the requirement for parliamentary confirmation hearings.

Separately, Lee will also preside over a meeting to inspect the national safety system.

Lee took office Wednesday without a transition period as the June 3 election was held early to replace Yoon, who was removed from office over his failed martial law bid.
