SABANG AWAITING GOVT DECISION ON ROHINGYA REFUGEES' FATE
Banda Aceh, July 11 (ANTARA) - Sabang's municipal administration is still waiting for a Foreign Affairs Ministry decision on the fate of Rohingya refugees who were stranded on Weh island several months ago, a spokesman said.
"We are still waiting for the Foreign Affairs Ministry's decision on whether to relocate the refugees or return them to their home country in Myanmar," Sabang Mayor Munawarliza said here on Saturday.
The mayor said that at a meeting with Foreign Affairs Ministry recently, there was an indication that the Myanmar refugees from the ethnic Rohingya community would be relocated but a further decision on their fate had yet to be made.
"From that meeting, there was a plan that they would be relocated but the relocation has yet to be realized because we are still waiting for a further decision from the Foreign Affairs Ministry," the mayor said.
According to Munawarliza, the Rohingya refugees would be relocated to Pangkal Pinang, Bangka island, but there was no certainty about the plan's implemetation.
"It was planned at the meeting with Foreign Affairs Ministry two months ago that the refugees would be relocated to an area in Pangkal Pinang but there was no follow up decision about it," Munawarliza said.
Meanwhile, Sabang Vice Mayor Islamuddin said the municipal administration continued to give good treatment to the Rohingya refugees who have been living in Sabang for more than six months.
"We continue giving them the best possible service and therefore they are still in good condition," Islamuddin said.
He added that their logistic needs continued to be met because a number of local and foreign non-governmental organizations were also providing assistance.
"Assistance for them from non-governmental organizations continues to trickle in," he said.
Since February this year, more than 400 Myanmarese refugees from the ethnic Rohingya community got stranded in Aceh, especially Idie area in East Aceh and Meulaboh in West Aceh.
