Yonhap News hosts symposium on security policy proposals for Lee gov't

SEOUL, June 26 (Yonhap) -- Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire, is set to host a symposium Thursday to explore policy recommendations for the new Lee Jae Myung administration amid rising global security uncertainties driven by the intensifying U.S.-China rivalry and growing protectionism.

The annual Korean Peninsula Symposium will be held at Hotel Shilla in central Seoul, co-hosted by the Ministry of Unification and the Institute for National Security Strategy (INSS).

Under the theme, "The shifting global order under the second Donald Trump administration and the new administration's response strategy", this year's event will feature two discussion sessions following a keynote speech by ruling party lawmaker Rep. Cho Jeong-sik. Video messages from U.S. Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) and Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) will also be presented.

Presidential secretary for public relations Lee Kyu-youn will read a congratulatory message from President Lee during the opening ceremony, which will also feature opening and welcome remarks by Yonhap News Agency President and CEO Hwang Dae-il and Vice Unification Minister Kim Nam-jung.

Presided over by Han Suk-hee, president of the INSS, the first session will feature a roundtable discussion on the new wave of U.S. isolationism and its impact on trade, diplomacy and security. Participants will include think tank researchers and directors from the United States, Japan and South Korea.

With the theme, "Turning challenges into opportunities and policy proposals for overcoming crises", former South Korean Ambassador to the U.S. Ahn Ho-young, former Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam and former Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee will join the second session to present policy recommendations for the new Lee Jae Myung administration.

Yonhap has hosted the symposium annually with the unification ministry since 2015 to bring together experts, politicians and government officials to examine the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and explore solutions to emerging issues.

Thursday's symposium will be streamed online on YouTube at https://youtube.com/live/u_DfxtOJmHA?feature=share in Korean and https://youtube.com/live/RDkfbIPVtXY?feature=share in English.
